Book XVII is named after and inspired by the writings of the Roman Philosopher, Pliny the Elder. In his book number 17 (XVII), chapter 35, he discusses why wines from certain areas are exceptional. He reviews the history of wine, inclusive of the viticulture and vinification process. Pliny felt strongly that site and terroir is the most important attribute of growing great grapes which translate into exquisite wines. De Toren capitalizes on these principles in the crafting of Book XVII.
